The New Mum/Mama Tag

So it’s time for the “new mum tag”! I’ve been tagged by Viv and you can read her tag post here. It’s been a while since I was a “new” mum, but the questions in the post are things I’d love to share with you all anyway, so here we go!

1. FAVOURITE MUM HACK?

The only hack I can think of is from when Lilly was a newborn. She really didn’t like being in a Moses basket during the first nights at home, so we decided to try her in the carry cot from our double pushchair. She ending up loving it and slept like a dream until we got her a swinging crib instead.

2. MOST EMBARRASSING MUM MOMENT?

Most of my embarrassing mummy moments are trough me not being able to steer any pushchair we had – and we got through a few, haha. I was forever crashing into things – gently though, don’t worry!
To this day I’m still a bad mummy driver. Lilly has a push along trike that she sometimes uses when I take her to pick Amelia up from nursery. I managed to bump into the gate outside the nursery in front of all the other mums and dads!

3. WHAT PART OF THE DAY DO YOU LOVE THE MOST?

I love getting the girls up in the morning. Their little faces light up when I open the door and I’m nearly always greeted with “good morning mummy” now too, which is the sweetest. A smile on all our faces really is the best way to start the day!

4. WHAT PART OF THE DAY DO YOU LIKE THE LEAST?

The time between picking Amelia up from nursers and dinner time. This time always seems to be the worst time of day for Lilly as the tiredness really sets in. Amelia comes home from nursery super tired too so they both get a bit grumpy and whingey, until they’re fed and their moods completely change!

5. THE WORST THING SOMEONE SAID TO YOU WHEN YOU WERE PREGNANT?

I can’t think of anything that was said to me when I was pregnant, but I remember my Nan visiting us a few days after we’d come home from the hospital with Amelia and she happily pointed out how I’d not lost any weight yet! My nan really says what she thinks, but looking back I find it funny how my nan has no fear – haha!

6. BABY NAME YOU DIDN’T AGREE ON?

To be honest we were pretty laid back with choosing the girls’ names, so much so that we’d pretty much went for the first names we thought of.

7. DO YOU CO SLEEP?

Nope! The only time Amelia’s stayed in our bed is when she was properly ill for the first time, but apart from that we’ve never co slept.

8. SOMETHING YOU BOUGHT BUT NEVER USED?

When Amelia was born we had the Angelcare motion sensor mat to go in her cot, along with the baby monitor. I don’t know why, but we never got round to putting the mat in her cot to use it! I wouldn’t say it was a pointless or useless bit of equipment though, I’m sure it would’ve put my mind at ease when both girls were babies!

9. 3 HOSPITAL BAG MUST HAVES?

Maternity pads, the biggest knickers you’ve ever seen and something sweet for afterwards! I think that pretty much sums it up – haha.

10. ARE YOU ROUTINE MUM OR A GO WITH THE FLOW MUM AND WHAT DOES BEDTIME LOOK LIKE?

Routine, routine, routine! We’ve always had a structured day with a semi-strict routine since the girls were born. I think it helped me adapt to motherhood more, as when I was adapting to the changes of having a new baby, I still had some sort of structure to the days and felt like I knew what I was doing.
Our bedtime routine is that after everyones dinner has gone down, I’ll bath the girls and pop them in their jammies. Then brush their teeth and comb their hair before going back downstairs. We’ll then sit and watch “Moon and Me” on CBeebies and after that finishes, I take Lilly up to bed. Amelia stays up until 7 and we’ll sit and read her reading book from Nursery together before heading up too.
Now that the girls a 2 and 3, at bedtime, we try to read to them both a few times a week. They’ll be snuggled up in their beds and one of us will sit between them to read to them so they can see all of the works and the pictures. We also do this with their nightlight on instead of the main bedroom light as we can change the brightness on it.

11. WHAT TYPE OF LABOUR DID YOU HAVE? WHAT PAIN RELIEF DID YOU CHOOSE?

With both girls my labours were induced.
Amelia was a very intense induction which lasted 3 days. I had the hormone drip on the final day and despite the most intense forced contractions I managed to breathe my way through it all – as I wanted! I was given some tablets at one point, because I was being prepped for an emergency C section, which didn’t happen in the end – I think they might’ve been paracetamol? I just remember throwing the paper cup across the room after swallowing them! My labour with Amelia was 8 hours in total.
With Lilly I was at the very early stages of induction and had only 1 pessary before Lilly was showing signs of discomfort when I was being monitored. I was rushed to the delivery suite to then give birth after just 45minutes! During that time the midwives were trying to convince me to opt for a c-section because of my waters breaking unknowingly, but I refused. With Lilly I had paracetamol, but I brought it straight back up so it didn’t make any difference.

12. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MUM SHAMED?

I don’t think so and I hope being “mum shamed” never happens. Though this seems the most appropriate place to add that I have felt increasingly judged for the way I parent and the things I do for the girls, by family. I guess I wouldn’t say I felt “mum shamed”, but more like being made to believe that I’m doing things “wrong” or that I’m not doing a good enough job as a mother – do you know what I mean? I think I’ll write about this in more depth soon.

13. THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED SINCE BECOMING A MUM?

One of the biggest challenges has been our experience with Amelia having DDH.
This was Amelia before going down for surgery. I mistakenly gave her felt tips which she got all over the bedsheet!
Going through your child having multiple surgeries and hospital stays is scary no matter what it’s for, I’m sure!

14. THE BEST BIT ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN – BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO A NEW MUM?

The same advice I give to new mums is the advice I received too – WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE“. Really, no matter what it is – a meltdown when leaving the house or you’re sitting on your own crying, feeling mum-guilt for something – we’ve all been there at one point!

15. WHO’S YOUR MUM CRUSH?

My mum crush is Emma – BrummyMummyof2. I’ve followed her adventures for a while now and I think she’s just amazing! Also, if we’re talking celeb mummys, Stacey Solomon is high up there too – since she replied to me on twitter that one time and all of the inspirational mummy posts she writes, it’s hard not have a mum crush on her!

16. AND WHO DO YOU TAG?
